Other places to visit...

Playing catch up...

Well, I've done it again. I've gotten behind on my updating. I don't know what it is... I'm on my computer often enough...

Well, let's catch up shall we? How are you? How's the family? Glad to hear you're well, and that everyone is doing fine... Or mostly. There are a few of you out there that I've heard from, and I pr@y for you all. It really is a blessing to know so many people have been keeping up with my travels.

On to the things you've missed in the last few days. I believe I left you with the update about Hong Kong and told you I was in Shanghai... Yes. Well, I was in Shaoxing last week Tuesday night, and then on Wednesday I took the train up to Shanghai to see the city and hang out some more with my friend Jen. I traveled with her in Cambodia and Thailand for a bit, and she encouraged me to visit. So, I went up wednesday afternoon/evening and we had dinner and hung out at her apartment. Then, one of my city mates, Seth, decided to come visit too. The goof didn't think to come with me. But luckily it's only about an hour or so train ride. Jen and I went for 'Sheun-Chien" (phonetic spelling) for breakfast. It's a sort of dumpling that is filled with meat, and a bit of soup and then fried on one side. It might be the best thing I've eaten in China. They are pretty delicious. And then we walked around this giant ten story mall for a bit, and I rode on the longest escalator I've ever been on; It stretched from the 7th to the 4th floor. Crazy!! (There was a video of it... look above for it) Once Seth arrived in town we all ventured to the Shanghai IKEA. And just like in the US, they have 1 kuai ice cream cones!!! So, of course we all got a cone and proceeded to the housewares section. We looked at lamps, and rugs, candles, and everything in between. Jen bought a rug for her apartment, Seth bought some pot holders, and I bought three candles for my room. I do love candles so...and they smell just lovely. Then, we headed back to Jen's apartment to drop off the rug, and chill for a little before dinner. We ate at a Shanghai-nese restaurant. Believe it or not, each city in China has a very unique way of making food. So the same dish can be drastically different in Shaoxing, Hangzhou and Shanghai even though the three cities are all really close together. Following dinner, Jen, Seth, another of our friends Tim, and I all headed down to the Bund. If you've never heard of it... google it. It's like the skyline of Shanghai. It's the most famous site in the city, and probably all of Zhejiang (Juh-gee-ang) province. It was a pretty awesome sight. Which is saying something considering what I've seen in the last month. The section of Shanghai where the Bund is located is very westernized. The city has a strong western influence because as business took over the city, and western business men, employment, and tourism grew the city adapted to what westerners wanted.

This picture show two things; the Bund and the opposite side of the river. The Bund is on the left side of the picture with the tall buildings. The bight light on the left is a street lamp... oh well. Then there's a dark space in the center, that's the river. and the right side of the picture is the skyline that faces the Bund. There's one building, just to the right of the bright street lamp, that's all dark. It's not finished yet, thus the reason it's dark. When it is finished it will be the tallest building in the world. (I think) Oh, and I should clarify. The whole area is called the Bund.... Not just one side of the river. I was differentiating for description purposes. =)

Right-eo... On to what happened after Shanghai. On Friday, Valentine's Day, Jen and I took the train down to Hangzhou to hang out for a bit. We met our friends Hannah and Nate and the four of us went to see the movie Frozen in the theaters, and then out for Mexican food before heading back to the apartment to snuggle up and watch another movie. Then, on Saturday after lunch I headed back to the Xing... (I say that as short for Shaoxing, so its pronounced 'shing'...like ring. In case there was confusion.)

Once at home, I rearranged my room (new year, new look!), did some laundry, lit one of my new candles!! And prepared myself for school on monday. Monday rolls around and I go to school and work out my new schedule and get teaching materials. Tuesday I start school! Classes go pretty well, but the weather is not very nice. It's raining. I biked to school with my bike poncho in the morning, but that wasn't entirely pleasant, so I took a taxi when I returned for afternoon sessions. By then it was full on snowing. Crazy! Well, even more crazy is after my classes I find out school has been canceled for the following two days due to weather. The snow quit later on Tuesday evening and we've had no precipitation since then. The 'storm' gave us about an inch and a half of slush everywhere, and maybe an inch of snow on grassy areas. It was a lot of rain/snow mix. Since we had two days, and our apartment is rather boring, we went over to the guys campus and hung out at Mr. Feeney's apartment. Mr. Feeney is the cat. Tony and Seth live there, but we never know who's house to call it, so we say it's Mr Feeney's. =) And that brings us to the present.

I have school in the morning tomorrow. I'm going to spell with my six year olds. We're learning the four seasons, and their temperatures. Summer is hot. Autumn is cool. Winter is cold. Spring is warm. It's cute.... But I teach the same thing four times. When the end of my session rolls around, I'm ready to be done. Haha.

Until next time.

Hong Kong

I know it's been a few days since my last post. Bit I've been all over creation in the last little while.

I believe my last post was at the KL airport. So you need to know about Hong Kong. The purpose of going to HK was for a friends of china retreat. Which I realize means nothing to you, but I'm getting there. As many teachers as possible met in HK for a few days if fellowship and b!ble study. It was great to see everyone and catch up. We were able to worsh!p together three times and I felt very full of the spirit. We also had a morning of free time to explore the city. My friend Margaret, who lives in Beijing, and I went wandering. We took a ferry ride, saw the HK walk of stars, saw the skyline and went to the ladies market where I got another painting.

Then on Monday night after closing service a large group of us played ultimate frisbee for a while and finished the nite around the campfire. We stayed at a YMCA camp/resort. So one night we roasted various meats for dinner over charcoal fires. There were marshmallows too! Overall, it was an awesome weekend and a great sort of last hur-ahh. Tuesday was full of so longs and plans to visit and then in the afternoon we flew out.

We flew into Hangzhou and then taxied home to Shaoxing. But I'm in Shanghai now and will tell you all about it soon.

Travel schtuffs

Have you ever got that feeling that you've entered a human trafficking ring? No? Shame. Travel in Thailand can feel that way. Let me explain our trip from Koh Tao  to Ao Nang. We booked a dual ticket ferry and bus to get us to Krabi. Which is where the airport is. The ferry left at 9pm and took 8 hours or so. It was slow and we had beds so it was pretty great. And now I can check night ferry off the list of transportations. Anyway, I digress. We get off the ferry and show out joint ticket and are shuffled down two blocks to a 'travel' shop with a fairly large group of people that  I recognized from the ferry. We were told to wait. Then asked to step inside to confirm our ticket. We had a ticket. What was there to confirm? I didn't go, the boys in my group took care of it. But they wanted us to pay extra to get from the bus station we were being taken to and either Krabi or Ao Nang. It seemed pretty steep and the lady was obviously lying. She said a few things that were plainly wrong. Well, it seemed like we wouldn't leave this little shop till we made a decision so we paid the jacked price so we didn't get stranded. Then we were put in the back of a truck and taken a kilometer or two down the road to a 'station' of sorts. The man there said we got cheated. No shit! But we were able to get dropped where we wanted in Ao Nang. From there it was pretty nice. The hostel that the boys had stayed at two weeks earlier arranged shuttles to the airport for us and we were able town joy a couple hours on the beach.

Now I'm sitting in KL airport. I've been here for about 6 hours and my flight is in another 7 or so. Luckily I can function pretty well on little to no sleep and can power nap anywhere, even on planes. (Guess I take after my dad like that) I found a free lounge that plays movies. So I've watched iron man 3 and zombie land. Now I think it's time for a little late night snack. See y'all in Hong Kong.

Until next time

Koh Tao

Well I've left the island. Figuratively kicking and screaming and dragging my fingernails on the dock.

My last dive was Monday morning and they were good. Visibility was lower on the first dive than previous but still pretty cool for this rookie. I even have a list of fish-ies for you if you want to know what I saw.

Blue ringed angel fish
Moon wrasse
Long fun banner fish
Titan trigger fish
Sergeant major fish
Long fin bat fish
Lions mane jelly fish. (For that I was only in water about 6meters deep and he was right under us as we went to do skills. So cool!!)
Giant grouper
Cheveron barracuda
Weibels butterfly fish

Basically Gods creation has this whole other side that I was mostly ignorant of. And now that I've been introduced I plan to explore some more. I'm thinking I might have to visit the Philippines or Bali before I return to America this summer.

Until next time.

Diving day 2

Headed out soon for day two in the water and under it!! More skills testing and another open water dive.

I passed my written exam this morning and we're good to go!

Once certified I'll be able to dive anywhere in the world. Which means..... If anyone wants to go to the Caribbean, Hawaii, or anywhere in SE Asia you have a travel buddy in me! And with this last month under my belt, I consider myself a moderate to advanced traveller so no worries for you with me along. :)

I'll let you know how the dives go!!

Until next time.

DIVING!!!!

Okay people. Diving is the shit!!! Like the most awesome thing in my life to this point other than being born.

Today we did some skills testing in shallow water and I took to it like a natural. All those swim lessons and hours upon hours spent in a pool only helped a little. The ocean is so different. And currents suck!!

But as we were swimming to the shallow part our instructor said we could put in our breathers and breathe underwater as we swam. So of course I jumped at the chance. And looking down I saw a ton of fish!! There were little bitty bright blue ones and darker blue with purple and striped ones and some black and white ones with the long fins on top and bottom and DORY! I saw dory and it was so cool!

I can't even convey the awesomeness. But I will definitely be diving more often. :)

Until next time.
